Have you ever seen The Flaming Lips Live ? I’m telling you, they really know how to put on a show . It is just amazing to watch them on stage , listen to their amazing effects , hypnotic music and honestly seeing how these guys always keep the crowd engaged is just spectacular. Here are are some images from last year performance in Gulf Shores, Alabama , and I must say was lucky enough to be standing at just the right spot with my camera when Wayne Coyne got in the human size hamster ball crawling atop the crowd . This was the first time I shot with Shaileesha Shrestha, she is from Nepal and we recently got together for some portraits. This was a great opportunity to do more studio work using a simple seamless background paper. Shaileesha brought to her session a couple of Saree garments , very beautiful and colorful fabrics that wrap around the body and are worn by women from India and other countries in South Asia. For this session I used a combination of different light setups (one – three lights) , a Deep Octa soft box as the main light source and a gray background paper, which it was blown out with light in some shots to obtain the white background look. Thank you again to Shaileesha for allowing me to be creative during her session and being a good sport!

This is a long overdue post. Back in May, I had the opportunity to collaborate as a freelance photographer for an Atlanta Online magazine: The Silver Tongue Online . They needed some images from some of the major bands playing during the latest Hangout Music Festival in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Every year this festival keeps growing and attracting mores visitors to the area and bringing some really big names in music. This year was estimated a total of 35,000 attendes ,and five stages were built to give room to the 66 bands playing, including : The Dave Matthews band, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jack White, The Flaming Lips and lots more. Concert Photography as many already know is not an easy task, especially at night ,when is not a matter of just capturing the essence and energy of the bands playing but also requires to know how to operate your camera manually, and adjust your settings accordingly to the continuos multi color light changing situations , while your favorite musicians keep playing and rocking the stage !…One of my goals shooting the bands was showing the interaction between the band members from a wider perspective since concert photography seems to be very saturated with “right in your face shots”
. I had not originally planned to bring a step ladder with me , however very quickly it became a great tool making a huge difference being able to compose above peoples heads from the VIP crowd. Also bringing a good quality monopod with you works great for camera placement/support and stability. The Canon 5d mark II is indeed a great camera that allows you to use really high ISO without compromising quality . Big thanks to Sindy Lucas for getting in touch and giving me the opportunity, and Allen Ross Thomas , one hell of a concert photographer!, ( if you stopped here looking for concert photography images you gotta check him out) He’s also got some great tips on his website
. Here are some Images from Jack White’s performance on stage. You can also see my published images here. Read the rest of this entry …
Recently I have been shooting more with natural light than with strobes. I love strobes ,speed lights and using light modifiers but not always I feel in the mood to carry all that stuff around with me or setting everything up with lightstands, unless I have an assistant with me or the shot really requires it. So lately I have been using the best possible available light and some large reflectors to bounce the light back to the subject and avoid harsh shadows. Here are some pics with Yulia , just using natural light during her session… Read the rest of this entry …

The learning curve of Photoshop.. Here is a question I kept asking myself over and over: If you are a photographer/artist should you learn to use layers?.. or neglect those tools calling yourself a purist?. Personally, I enjoy taking pictures and the editing process that involves giving your images a unique and personal look , adding a special sauce , or whatever you want to call it these days
. I do in fact prefer spending more time behind the camera clicking the shutter and interacting with my subjects, than hours editing images. However sooner or later you realize that you at least need to practice your Photoshop skills to make some of your favorite images or idea visually POP, if you wanna stay creative and competitive. Keep in mind that I said “creative” not “corrective“. Unfortunately the idea of creating something unacceptable with the attitude in mind to FIX it later in PS is still existing in some circles.
Recently I had met with Juliana and her family for a photo session. Julie is going to be a mom once again, and she is excited as any expecting mother could ever be. We started with some portraits indoors using a Deep Octa soft box which provides some beautiful studio light. A 28″Wescott Apollo was used as fill ,but also as the main light source with the profile shots. Then we moved outdoors and continued shooting mostly using natural light throughout the remainder of our session. Read the rest of this entry …

I Love meeting interesting people ,especially when they share in common some kind of artistic lifestyle .. You can always tell when you engage in a conversation with someone, how passionate and dedicated they are for that thing they do: a profession, hobby, or an special activity that makes them feel complete and give their life a true meaning. Agustina Dezeo, fits that description. She is a contemporary dancer from Argentina ,whom I had the pleasure to meet recently and got together for her photo session on Destin Beach ,Florida. She started dancing at a very young age, and has been performing on stage in Argentine theaters for several years delighting the viewers with her natural talent.
We had an amazing time during her photo session ,and despite the fact that the weather conditions were not the best , we still made it work for us, but I coudn’t have done it as well as we did, without the support of the team from that day: Gerardo Patiño and Adrian Alegre were really awesome during the behind the scenes shots ( we also put the little Fuji x10 to the test that morning, with the BTS photos & video images) and big thanks to Adrian assisting carrying the lighting grip…( more like “running & carrying the light” and getting his shoes wet!…
. I must say Keeping up with Agustina agility was not an easy task
but it was all worth it in the end! (… she really owned the beach with her awesome air jumps!!). It was an unforgettable experience, indeed!… Read the rest of this entry …
